CQC Fundamental Standards

We’ll help to keep you on the right side of the law and demonstrate and meet the demands of the CQC’s Fundamental Standards on safety, which all care providers must comply with.

HSE Guidance

Use of equipment is covered by the HSE guidance, HSG220 Health and Safety in Care Homes, which stresses the need for regular maintenance and inspection.

The paper clarifies the role of the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in the safety of medical devices, and includes useful guidance on:

  • electrical safety, both fixed electrical installations and portable electrical equipment
  • the safe use of stair lifts and lift platforms

Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER)

These regulations state that if you own, operate or have control over lifting equipment, such as hoists and accessories, you need to service and inspect the equipment every six months.  With a service contract, we will schedule these in and our software will automatically send you a message when your next service is due.

In most cases, lifting equipment is also work equipment, so the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) will also apply.

PUWER – Provision and Use of Work Equipment

These regulations state that work equipment that you own, operate or have control over is:

  • suitable for the intended use
  • safe for use, maintained in a safe condition and inspected to ensure it is correctly installed and does not subsequently deteriorate
  • used only by people who have received adequate information, instruction and training
  • accompanied by suitable health and safety measures, such as protective devices and controls. These will normally include guarding, emergency stop devices, adequate means of isolation from sources of energy, clearly visible markings and warning devices
  • used in accordance with specific requirements, for mobile work equipment and power presses

WRAS – Water Regulations Advisory Scheme

The Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS) is a conformance mark that demonstrates that an item complies with high standards set out by Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations.  These regulations are for the design, installation, operation and maintenance of plumbing systems, water fittings and water-using appliances. They have a specific purpose to prevent misuse, waste, undue consumption or erroneous measurement of water and, most importantly, to prevent contamination of drinking water.

TMV – Thermostatic Mixing Valves

A thermostatic mixing valve (TMV) is a valve that blends hot water with cold water to ensure constant, safe water outlet temperatures.  The storage of water at high temperature removes one possible breeding ground for Legionella.  We will carry out an assessment to identify the risks in your water system and any associated equipment, and establish any possible exposure to Legionella risks.
